This 1932 adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel by Erle C. Kenton is held by many as the most disturbing one. The brilliant British actor Charles Laughton, who will direct the Night of the Hunter later on, plays the part of the mad scientist, and Bela Lugosi even makes a short cameo. A jewel magnificently shot by Karl Struss (Murnau’s Sunrise), banned in England until 1958 and produced before the infamous Code Hayes.
