In a coal town devastated by misery, four orphan brothers from 10 to 20 try to survive. Kiichi, the older one, finds a job in a coal mine, but his situation is unstable. The young man writes his daily life in a diary.

A year - and three films! - after Stolen desire, Imamura directs an adaptation of a Japanese best-seller which highlits the fate of the Zainichis, Corean migrants who lived in Japan. Made at the same period and thematically close to Nagisa Ôshima’s A town of love and hope, My second brother bears the first instance of a Japanese New Wave. The film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival, during which Europe discovered the filmmaker, before awarding him two years later.
