The movie is freely inspired by the life of the artist Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934),  known for his erotic watercolors. In a relationship with a widow, he triggers the jealousy of her husband's ghost and of her equally jealous lover who murdered the said husband. The artist is drawn into a dreamy erotic maelstrom where imagination kindles the senses.

Though the first two installments were fairly successful, it took Genjirō Arato ten years to find funds to complete the trilogy. In Yumeji, life becomes a colored dream where works of art come to life, engulf reality and capture the individual in their frame. Often close to Terayama's farcical choreographies, Suzuki casts an ultimate veil of illusion. In this filmed poem, free of constraints, you can hear the same infectious melody by Shigeru Umebayashi that would later be successfully picked up in In the Mood for Love.
