Coming home in the dark
A teacher and his family set off to explore an isolated coastline in New Zealand. The journey turns into a nightmare when their path crosses that of a psychopath and his accomplice. But is this encounter really fortuitous?
For his directing debut, New Zealand actor James Ashcroft adapts a short story by Owen Marshall and delivers a nocturnal nightmarish road-movie, a survival movie revealing a guilty past that was thought to be forgotten, doubled with a violent attack on New Zealand's educational and social system. With his tight direction, his clear mastery of time and space, a dry and uncomplacent brutality, James Ashcroft doesn't take us for a pleasant ride. Holding our breath, our hands moist, we strongly hope he will continue down the same path.
