Well known for his sulfurous eroticism and his dark noir movies, Takashi Ishii went into overdrive with this rape and revenge movie without victory; his masterpiece. No liberating vengeance for Chihiro who - like Thana in Ferrara’s Ms .45, - plunges deeper into hell. The tragedy explicits Ishii's double scream:: his view on women’s status in Japan, and his own intimate pain as he lived through his cancer stricken wife’s agony during the shooting. Death clings to this venomously beautiful Freeze me, a poignant feminist requiem.
