Once upon a time there were a brother and sister called Jacob and Marie. Out of a job, their father decided to abandon them in a forest. In his jacket, Jacob found a letter from his mother telling them to go see their uncle in Spain. But when they got there....

When the director of The Northerners and Schneider vs. Bax (L’Étrange Festival Grand Prize in 2015) revisits the Grimm fairy tales and sets them in our era, he reappropriates their imagery without losing sight of harsh realities, by applying the art of distanciation and counterpoint so typical of his world. Here the new ogres are organ traffickers. Filled with unexpected encounters, insane twists and turns and other absurd gags, this wild and thrilling road movie journeys through horizons as different as Scandinavia and Spain. Van Warmerdam  never stops reinventing his storyline, faking to end it just to head off towards new directions, taking us from one surprise to another. He hated Grimm's original 2003 edit so much, he would exclude it from any medium or retrospective, until he decided to re-edit it with Job Ter Burg, his faithful collaborator since 2009. After four years work, here at last is his own version that he claims will allow us to throw the old one into the trash can: "And now for something completely different".
