In Copenhagen, Maja, a declining Danish actress, meets Leah, a young Jewish graduate from London. It’s love at first sight. But when Leah suffers a epileptic seizure that leaves her crippled, Maja follows her back to Stamford Hill, her Hasidic neighborhood in London. The meeting with her mother, the worrisome and very orthodox Chana, coincides with strange phenomena that will open the doors of the unknown.
After the staggering Relic, Australian Natalie Erika James’ first feature film, here’s another example of a feminine view on horror, that starts under the touching auspices of lesbian romance before moving into folk horror, much increased by the alchemy of Jewish culture. The supernatural stronghold on the house, sometimes reminds of Argento’s trilogy, and we could imagine Chana as a hidden fourth mother.
