Born in Glasgow on December 5 1969, a National Film and Television School graduate, Lynne Ramsay is noticed with her graduation and debut short film, Small Deaths, with which she won the 1996 Cannes Prix du Jury. After several more rewarded films, her first feature film, Ratcatchers, is an affirmation of her singular social and poetic point of view supported by her bold and striking esthetical choices. With an extraordinary performance by its lead Samantha Morton, Morvern Callar (2002) confirms Ramsay's interest for intimate injuries and deep traumas, with a cinema that works on and shakes up our emotions through the filter of her protagonists. For Lynne Ramsay does not conceive art as comfortable entertainment. We then had to wait until 2011 for the explosive We Need To Talk about Kevin to grip and haunt us forever. Plunging us into the hell of a mother confronted to the madness of her murderous son and her own guilt, this tetanizing adaptation of Lionel Shriver's novel revealed Ezra Miller and offered Tilda Swinton a highly ambiguous role. The filmmaker then released A Beautiful Day (2017), a surprising rereading of Taxi Driver, where Joaquin Phoenix, an autistic and vengeful veteran, revisits the Travis Bickle character in a hallucinated mode. As unprolific (4 films in 22 years) as she is talented, she never stops nourishing our expectations. Among her exciting projects in the works, an adaptation of Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Polaris which should star Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. To quench our impatience (the wait is far too long!), here she is with a carte blanche as unhinged as her tormented and hypnotic world.
