Young and beautiful Saltanat is forced by her mother to leave her village to try to pay back her recently deceased father's debts. Kuandyk, a candid suitor, decides to follow her and help her anyway he can.

In a style half-way between Takeshi Kitano (Kid’s return, A scene at the sea) and Alex van Warmerdam (The Northerners, Borgman), Yerzhanov returns with a more contemplative work still sprinkled with the absurd poetry that is his trademark and marked with literary references (the film's title comes from Camus's The Stranger). A fine surprise of the Un Certain Regard selection at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
