Rainha Diaba (The Devil Queen) is a truly strange underworld queen. Cross-dressing and glamorous, she rules the world of drugs and brothels with an iron fist. But beneath their servitude, her heterosexual henchmen dream of power as well. A coup d'état is brewing.
Emerging in Brazil in the late 1960s, Tropicalism, far from being limited to music, irrigated all the arts, including cinema. In contrast to Cinema Novo, it celebrated irreverence, the baroque, anarchy, and popular culture. Outrageously camp, The Devil Queen revisits the tropes of film noir through a queer lens, like a bloody carnival dynamiting the underworld's virile mythologies and homophobia. A cult masterpiece admired by Kleber Mendonça Filho, who contributed to its restoration, this incendiary film, disguised as genre cinema, seems decades ahead of many contemporary struggles.
