1995 – In the now almost deserted ancient mining town of Mangya, as a sandstorm approaches, forty three ruthless outlaws set up a meeting to join their leader Beishann in order to retrieve a treasure. Policeman Xia Ran organises the resistance, but does he even stand a chance against this horde of bloodthirsty bandits ?
Somewhere between a thriller, a Western, and a martial arts movie, Trapped installs a dazzling desert huis-clos, that is as explosive as it is epic. Inspired by models such as John Carpenter’s Assault or the Coen brothers’ No Country For Old Men, while remaining faithful to the conventions of Chinese action movies, Qi Zhang manages a rising tension, amplified by the alienating desert, a landscape of the absurd that is reminiscent of Yerzhanov’s Karatas.
