Two fun loving high school outcast buddies are accosted by an old man looking like a hobo, who offers to teach them Kung-fu in order to restore justice. Quite the mission!
His Mon Mon Mon Monsters! stunned us in 2017. With this adaptation of his novel, written 25 years ago, the Taiwanese director proves he’s lost none of his singular energy: his art of tone mixing draws Kung Fu into a generalized exhausting hysteria where fantasy comedy turns apocalyptic. If Giddens Ko pays loving and parodic tribute to the Shaw Brothers and other Hong Kong classics (connoisseurs will relish the multiple references), he veers into an unexpected gravity, reaffirming his fascination for marginalized teenage characters, whom he thrusts into both adventure and irremediable pain.
