After he left New York, Alain Leroy went to rehab to cure his alcoholism. Even though the doctors consider him as cured and tell him that he can go, Alain doesn’t want to do anything and has nothing but one idea in mind: suicide.
As the fire of the New Wave was slowly coming to an end, Louis Malle adapted Pierre Drieu la Rochelle’s novel, the one-way journey of a man who doesn’t want to get old but whose youth is already over. Imbued with a dark romanticism and a fatalism who seeks a reason to live, Mourice Ronet (Purple Noon, The pool) delivers his most spectacular perfomance. Grand jury Prize of the 1963 Venice Film Festival.
