At the same time Roger Corman was in his Poe period, Alexandre Astruc, a Nouvelle Vague filmmaker, tackled the fantasy genius for the first time. Avoiding baroque excess, using many excerpts from the original text, Astruc's streamlined and rigorous directing allowed him to work on fear and install a gradual suffocating feeling.
