Frankie suffers from dyschronometria, a degenerative disease that deforms her perception of time and reality. She’s striving to win back her daughter’s custody from her mother in law, which she lost after the father’s death. As her dire situation is worsened by her disability, she accepts a mysterious deal with the participant of a speech group she’s joined.
Shot in 16mm on a small budget, Gazer embodies the spirit of a bygone era of cinema, with anti-heroes lost in a city that engulfs them. And though we think of vertigo mind bending films like Memento, this work, as palpitating as its protagonist Frankie’s heartbeat, even more evokes the paranoid thrillers of the New Hollywood. Frankie is portrayed with infinite conviction by Ariella Mastroianni, also the filmmaker’s partner, and co-writer of the script. A nocturnal melancholy wandering troubled by a fascinating mental confusion.
