In 1734, on his way to Madrid, a young man finds himself caught in a series of picaresque and fantastic misadventures and makes numerous encounters.
It seems almost unthinkable that TV could show this mini series in 1973, a wild dreamy erotic trip with an esoteric imagery reminiscent of both Jodorowsky and Paradjanov. Amazing: this absolute marvel, adapted (just like Rebecca’s Story, also shown in the INA Fantastica 2 program) from one the stories in Potocki’s The Manuscript Found in Saragossa, often equals Wojciech Has’s masterpiece and wonderfully restitutes the novel’s permanent tone changes. With a sublime score by Pierre Vassiliu, an unusual TV experience, an unforgettable journey, more than a film, The Duchess of Avila is a vision. It has the beauty of the mirages and labyrinths of the mind.
