A philosophy teacher introduces her students to the concept of the death of God. Her sister, a renowned gynecologist, pays her a visit. She's mandated by the government to reduce the number of abortions in the city.
Six years after Scythe Hitting Stone, Anja Kreis returns with this Nietzschean fable laced with Faustian themes portraying the abyss: a patriarchal contemporary Russia, misogynous, homophobic and clinging fanatically to the divine, where “the power of evil stems both from the government and the people’s mentalities.” With a very realistic treatment, Kreis infuses a subtle terror, as she watches these sisters scrutinize bodies and souls, to probe the mystery of the void. Meticulous, somber, and relentless, The Alienated questions the absence of an afterlife through the eyes of dead embryos.. “God is dead but Hell remains.”
