Brand new master
Paolo (Philippe Leroy) is a ruthless reporter who travels the world to film a reality he doesn’t hesitate to manipulate at the risk of putting his and others’ lives in peril.
Before he became known for the giallo classic, Black Belly of the Tarantula, Paolo Cavara, with Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi co-directed the mythical Mondo Cane (1962). Five years later, fed up by the genre’s sensationalism, he let himself go in this meta work that takes the shape of a raging auto critic, paired with the condemnation of an entire system. He hammers it in by giving his own name to the dishonest, misogynist, greedy for glory anti-hero, embodied by the always brilliant Philippe Leroy, who has alas just left us. The screening of this disconcerting mise en abyme co-written by Alberto Moravia and Tonino Guerra, is a fitting opportunity to pay him a tribute.
