1983. Red Miller and Mandy Bloom, madly in love, lead a peaceful life away from the world, until they’re attacked by a sect. Mandy is burnt alive before Red’s eyes. The time for revenge is nigh. His consumed heart is nothing but apocalyptic.
If the word “trip” is often overused, how can it be avoided to describe the tragic, psychedelic, morbid and chaotic poem that is Cosmatos’s Mandy? A mutant beauty immersed in King Crimson’s Starless as well as the howling chainsaws of cenobite bikers, a dark musical score that would be Jóhann Jóhannsson’s last work, a literally possessed performance by Nicolas Cage, the bright colors, the emotional saturation: between nostalgia and postmodernism, Mandy leaves us high and dry.

J.G. Thirlwell

I wasn’t prepared for the psychedelic intensity of this film. An ecstatic, violent fever dream that literally descends into a blood drenched hell, it provides a great platform for Nicholas Cage at his most unhinged. The film also includes one of composer Johan Johansson’s last scores.
