After her son is kidnapped by organ smugglers, in the midst of a civil war, a young woman must accept the services of Steppenwolf, a sadistic ex-convict, who mistreats even her.
From the opening scenes, Yerzhanov confirms he has imposed his absurd, cruel and funny world. But Steppenwolf takes a step further into the abyss and human darkness and conjures a feeling of nihilism worthy of post-apocalyptic movies. The art of the oxymoron explodes in this unnatural duo - a brute and a fragile heroine weakened by her disability, forced to coexist - a stereotype the filmmaker quickly eludes, never pulling it towards redemptive harmony. With his masterly use of space and editing, Yerzanhov proves he doesn’t repeat himself, with each film adding a new chapter to his work.
