In the multimillionaire Maynard family, they don’t harm animals. But they do shoot strangers with shotguns for fun; and the butler cleans it up. Nevertheless, Mr Maynard wonders how far they can go without facing the consequences…
The 70s had Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion by Elio Petri. The Austrian filmmakers seize this idea of an elite, testing the absurdity of the well-oiled mechanics of the plutocratic and meritocratic system that prevents the guilty from being punished. Trump declared that even if he killed somebody, he would be reelected: the directors illustrate this phrase through satire stretched to total exaggeration, with a clinical approach that sometimes reminds of Lanthimos’s Dogtooth. And how clever it is, with such a dark theme, to set this abomination in bright sunlight! Entertaining… and slicing!
