A man takes a train to a nameless sanatorium where his father just died. Time is abolished, all bearings are blurred in a strange and yet familiar world.
Your eyelids feel heavy, very heavy. Relax and breathe deeply… Few artists remain who hold up supernatural mirrors, still believing in the cinema’s power to transport us elsewhere. Like Guy Maddin, the Quay brothers are part of these surviving magicians. It’s not surprising they should adapt short stories by Jewish Polish author Bruno Schultz, a genius of autobiography and fantasy, who had already inspired the model of Wojciech Has’s dream film The Hourglass Sanatorium. Mixing live footage and animation, the Quay brothers offer maybe their best film. An unclassifiable object of unimaginable beauty, a spectral tale we wish to never leave. The best present we could hope for on this thirtieth anniversary!
