A French village at the dawn of the 20th century. While a mysterious plague spreads, leaving wretched souls at death's door, Zélie, silent and empty eyed, tries to escape from her father’s grip, Jacob, a fanatical preacher who terrorizes his wife and daughter. The arrival of a wounded soldier offers her a glimpse of deliverance.
Three years after Pandemonium, Quarxxx summons both Claude Seignolle-like science fantasy and folklorism and Grand Guignol melodrama in this venomous tale, a theater of excessive emotions and unnatural acts. Les Âmes en Peine exudes a putrid scent of dark romanticism, with David Scherer’s special effects largely contributing to suffocate the viewer in this hellish world. Beware this mad preacher, portrayed by a possessed Thierry Frémont, almost as scary as Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter !
