As a truck driver, Georgi is about to deliver a load of flour. On his way, the road seems endless as he meets several people, disturbing policemen, a WWII veteran, a trio of farmers and a prostitute who seems a little too bold.

Corrosive portrait of contemporary Russia, My Joy is the first fiction film of documentary maker Sergei Loznitsa. A nihilist road-movie, beautifully captured by Oleg Mut and shot in Ukraine, real shock when he was shown in Cannes Film Festival in 2010.

I wanted to propose one of Werner Herzog’s movies but the management of the festival prevented me from it, arguing that all of his movies had already been shown at the festival. Then, I remembered a Sergei Loznitsa film, which I had stumbled upon a few years ago. This the way I like to discover movies : by stumbling upon them. Without reading any critics, or seeing any trailers, led only by curiosity and the call of mystery, or sometimes a poster. A man curled up in mud. This one was particularly mysterious. So I came in. I was out of luck ! It started like a road movie and quickly you get hurt both by the truck and by the road. Inextricable situations, a lost humanity, crazy glances… A strange atmosphere close to Bunuel ‘s L’Age d’Or. I would recommend the sequence shot of the hero’s arrival in the village square. Honestly as disturbing as in Even Dwarfs Started Small.
