While his plane is crashing in Finland at the end of the Second World War, the German pilot Hans is rescued by Laila, a young Lapp woman. They fall in love but the lovers are separated by the young girl's father. Years later, they meet again as Hans is now a photographer in Helsinki and he is looking for a model.

Huge flop when it came out in 1973, this free adaptation of a Pouchkine's novel put an end to the career of the director Teuvo Tulio but has acquired through time a reputation of cult film. Cursed movie par excellence, it needed eight years of production to reach the screen, shot in salvaged films. An erotic film with a most lovely dreamy and old-fashioned twist.

Finnish director Tulio was perhaps the most uninhibited melodramatist of international cinema– more so than Ophuls, Fassbinder, Kuchar or Waters. With this, his last movie and only one in colour, Tulio takes the lead once and for all. I’m not sure Pushkin scholars will find much of the story upon which this movie was originally based. The movie, shot in saturated palette unique to 70’s Finn-O-Vision, switches the Pushkin setting to WWII-vintage Llapland, where a reindeer herder’s daughter falls for a Nazi pilot recently crash-landed amid her father’s herds. Father has a habit of castrating livestock with his teeth, a grisly talent never forgotten by the screenplay, even when the story moves far from the ball-biting incivilities of the north to the sophisticated depravities of big city Helsinki. The movie’s art director time-travels back and forth between 40s and 70s, without any character ageing, without even telling the director, who seems not to have noticed – maybe the 70s decors made for a more natural setting for the frequent and completely gratuitous nude scenes. This just might be the craziest lovely movie ever made!
