William Freise-Greene, now old and forgotten, remembers the time when he was a photographer. He had discovered a way to project moving images and created the first movie cameras
A brilliant biopic about a major forgotten inventor, commissioned by the Festival of Britain, The Magic Box is primarily a powerful statement, an homage to the beginnings of cinema. Directed by one of the Boulting twins, major figures of British cinema almost as forgotten as their hero, played by a fabulous Robert Donat. The intimate approach and the artistic direction - Jack Cardiff’s photography is stunning - inherit the melancholy beauty of Emeric Pressburger / Michael Powell collaborations, bringing the film something really…magical. To be urgently rediscovered!
