Her torturers left her there, in a cage in the middle of the desert. She manages to escape and wanders about incapable of settling down. Wherever her steps lead her, through wilderness or cities, the world is only violence and desolation. In an undetermined era suggesting our species' last moments, people have abandoned language and humanity. They communicate through grunts and grumbles and have reinstated the lores of slavery, with the dominants mistreating and exterminating the others.
All of Rolf de Heer’s heroes are survivors and resistants. In continuity with his previous film, Charlie's Country, the Australian director delivers a political fable with no illusions, a sober agonizing poem filled with empathy, in which shines the radiant face of Mwajemi Hussein, as the last witness of universal horror. Her desperate eyes will haunt ours for a very long time.
