Cinéma vérité that slides into the realms of fantasy and the incongruous, "The Sweet East'' goes exactly where it wants to, including in its aesthetic metamorphoses, to the chaotic rhythm of enigmatic Lilian’s journey: she’s foolhardy, malicious and sharp. The cracks in reality open up on fantasy, and reveal the dysfunctions of a nation crumbling into madness. The filmmakers preferred to adopt fairy tale colors, with ogres that have the face of America’s demons. In this poetic, trivial and unhinged gem, like a new Chloë Sevigny, Talia Ryder is magnetizing.
