The Auschwitz commander, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig struggle to build a dream life for their family in a house with a garden next to the camp.
The fourth feature film by Jonathan Glazer, a rare and precious filmmaker, adapts Martin Amis by upsetting, through his cold clinical approach, the pastoral serenity of a well to do family in a monstrous rush in history, with omnipresent off screen framing that recalls László Nemes’s Son of Saul. An aesthetic and philosophical statement of great formal power, The Zone of Interest, winner of the Grand Prize in the last Cannes festival, makes a lasting impression.
