Sven lives with his mother Edeltraut who has Alzheimer Disease. Since he can't take care of her during the day, he hires Daniel, a nurse, to look after her, but gradually the two men grow closer and closer.

Shot with a ridiculously small budget (500euros), Heavy Girls, is the first feature film of this director who, after being turned down by producers, decided to shoot this intimate story with a lot of improvisation and the help of his friends and family (his own grand-mother, a non-professional actress, plays the part of Edeltraut). Shot and edited in 3 months, Heavy Girls is a concentrate of free and crazy energy.

I wanted to propose Heavy Girls by Axel Ranish and to my great surprise, the management of the festival accepted arguing that it wasn’t shown (too often). That’s lucky, because it has all the qualities that I’ve already quoted before: penniless as Belgian movies, funny and visual as burlesque films, harsh and frank as northern movies, transgressive and sometimes making us uncomfortable like the Surrealists. A small movie, inspired but going out the window . Directed by a young German film-maker who roped in his friends, his grandmother and his apartment. Why did I say “small movie”? A great movie. With an original script, actors with disarming ease, strong visual ideas. Really whatever the budget, provided that there is the cinema's exhilaration.
