Immense success when released back in the USSR (30 million entrances), The Needle quickly became cult, specially thanks to the charisma of its lead actor, the singer Victor Tsoi (who created the film's soundtrack), and in his style halfway between Jim Jarmusch and Jean-Luc Godard. With this punk UFO, Rachid Nougmanov offered to Kazakhstan his craziest and most liberated piece, giving birth to the Kazakh Nouvelle Vague, whose movies soon travelled the world and stopping in all of the biggest festivals.
