Czechoslovakia, circa 12th century. During a harsh winter, robbers strip Geman travelers and kidnap the Prince Kristion that they decide hold hostage. Quickly though, their neighbor lords start fighting each others.

It took Frantisek Vlacil 4 years to be able to adapt Vladislas Vancura's novel to the screen and to be able to transcribe again all its intensity in its themes, its narrative and on a figurative aspect as well. Called The Greatest Czech Film in 1994, this mystical and remarkable saga matches Tarkovsky's Andrei Roublev, Welle's Macbeth and Paradjanov's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors to which he often compared. Glowing, rare and priceless.
