Tchécoslovaquie, XIIème siècle. Durant un rude hiver, des bandits dépouillent des voyageurs allemands, et ne laissent en vie que le prince Kristion qu’ils gardent en otage. Rapidement, les seigneurs voisins commencent à s’affronter.

Il aura fallu à Frantisek Vlacil quatre ans pour réussir à porter à l’écran le roman éponyme de Vladislas Vancura et à retranscrire toute son intensité thématique, narrative et plastique à l’image. Élu en 1994 plus grand film de l’histoire du cinéma tchèque, cette fresque mystique au lyrisme magistral égale Andreï Roublev de Tarkovski, Macbeth d’Orson Welles et Les Chevaux de feu de Paradjanov, auxquels il fut souvent comparé. Incandescent, rare et inestimable.
