I wanted to propose one of Charlie Chaplin’s movie ( to those who prefer Buster Keaton : watch “One A.M” again, the short-film in which he is dead drunk, and we can talk about it later) but the management of the festival prevented me from it, arguing that all his movies had already been shown (at other festivals). And yet, I like this burlesque cinema, perhaps the memory of “Chicken Reel” in my sweet uneventful childhood. Looking to bypass this disgraceful censorship, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure came to me more than a tribute, like a revelation. Rare are those abstract characters who manage to stand out in a definitely listless reality but very well-defined. People so out of track that they can make you forget the track. Like a US Louis de Funes, Paul Reubens achieved it. Once. Before being swept along by the free world prudishness. This movie is also Tim Burton’s feature debut. Some pretend that this is his worst film. I like to believe that it is, in fact, his best (well, “Mars Attack” is good too).
