Le fantasque Pee Wee s’est fait voler sa bicyclette. Sur les conseils d’une voyante, il part à sa recherche à travers les États-Unis.

Pour sa première réalisation, Tim Burton porte sur grand écran les aventures d’une figure importante de la pop culture américaine des années 80 : Pee Wee Herman, un personnage créé et interprété par Paul Reubens d’abord sur les planches, puis à la télévision et au cinéma. Ce film de commande aurait pu être impersonnel sans les expérimentations esthétiques que se permet le réalisateur, comme dans le choix des couleurs, les effets spéciaux ou dans la scène de cauchemar expressionniste.
