La cantatrice Claire Lescot connaît une célébrité sans limite, mais semble dénuée de tout sentiment amoureux. Elle repousse tous ses soupirants les uns après les autres, parmi lesquels Einar Norsen, un savant qui compte bien lui donner une petite leçon..

Marcel L’Herbier est durant les années 1920 l’un des cinéastes les plus créatifs et les plus inventifs au monde. Après L’Homme du large et El Dorado, et avant L’Argent et Feu, Mathias Pascal, il signe ce qui est pour beaucoup son œuvre maîtresse. L’une des rares tentatives d’Art Déco sur grand écran, L’Inhumaine réunit toute la fine fleur avant-gardiste de l’époque : Pierre Mac Orlan au scénario, Fernand Léger aux décors, Paul Poiret aux costumes, Darius Milhaud à la partition originale. D’une modernité remarquable, le film est à nouveau visible dans les meilleures conditions grâce à une somptueuse restauration 4K.
