Tout juste libéré, Eddie Coyle reprend ses trafics illégaux et contacte la police pour devenir indicateur. Alors qu’il devient informateur pour Dave Foley, un agent du FBI, il est rapidement pris en étau entre les forces de l’ordre et la pègre.

En 1970 George V. Higgins, ancien procureur passé à l’écriture, publie son premier roman, salué par Ross Mac Donald et Norman Mailer. En 1973, Peter Yates porte le livre à l’écran et nous plonge dans un Boston glacial et mélancolique, paranoïaque à souhait. Face à Peter Boyle, Robert Mitchum trouve un de ses meilleurs rôles, pour lequel il alla rencontrer des vrais parrains de la mafia locale.
