Salué par Andy Warhol et John Waters, auteur de plus de 500 œuvres, George Kuchar est devenu l’un des cinéastes underground le plus respecté de sa génération. Son délirant et semi-autobiographique Hold Me While I’m Naked (1966) a même rejoint la très prestigieuse liste des cent meilleurs films du XXe siècle de The Village Voice. Meilleur exemple du talent de Kuchar, The Devil’s Cleavage est souvent décrit comme un scénario de Tennessee Williams et Russ Meyer mis en scène par Samuel Fuller et Josef von Sternberg.
