Victime d’un accident de circulation, le jeune Blizzard est amputé des deux jambes par le docteur Ferris, mais il découvre peu après que cette opération pouvait être évitée. Vingt-cinq ans plus tard, devenu un gangster de renom, il met en marche sa vengeance longuement préparée...

Bien avant sa collaboration avec Tod Browning, Lon Chaney atteint une renommée immédiate, sous la caméra de Wallace Worsley (L’As de cœur, Notre Dame de Paris). L’excessif acteur avait lui-même conçu un système qui lui bloquait douloureusement les jambes, limitant le tournage à moins de vingt minutes d’affilée. Une performance remarquable au service d’un film noir et subversif.
