Hiver 1944, sur le front des Ardennes belges. Sept soldats menés par le major Abraham Falconer se réfugient au château de Malderais, habité par le comte Henri Texier et Thérèse, sa jeune épouse. Le major décide d’en faire une position stratégique en attendant l’ennemi. 

Débutant comme un ersatz des Douze salopards, Un Château en enfer prend un virage étonnant où l’inaction et l’attente sont aussi captivantes que l’action et la confrontation des soldats. Avec son casting de prestige (Bruce Dern, Patrick O’Neal, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Peter Falk, et Burt Lancaster qui retrouve le réalisateur après Les Chasseurs de scalps et The Swimmer), Sydney Pollack signe le film le plus étonnant de sa carrière.
